Animated Short "Das Rad" tells the story of two rocks through time

This animated short tells the story of two rocks and their perception of time. Many years ago, I'd read "Andromeda Strain". The author of the book ponders the question of time and asks whether a rock is really a living thing, only one that moves so slow that a human cannot perceive it as living.

The things that make you go hmmmmm.

  1. This is so cool. Thanks! Perception of time, specifically geological time, is such an abstract thing. This reminds me of the comparison they make in geology class where geologic time is compressed to the scale of a calendar year. With each second equaling about 146 years, the dawn of modern man (Homo sapiens) is merely a little more than 10 minutes at the end of the entire calendar year! Even further, World War II began about 0.4 second before midnight on December 31. Crazy! It's true: we are just an imperceptible blip in the eyes of rocks.
